Chapter 7 The Major Similarity Scales
Major similarity scales are directly analogous to occupation similarity scales. Instead of measuring interest similarity to people who are employed in different occupations, major similarity scales measure interest similarity to people who are pursuing different courses of study.
Major similarity scales are constructed using exactly the same approach as occupation similarity scales. Specifically, this means:
- Elastic net penalized regression was used to create raw scores, comparing the GRS to each major sample.
- Standard scores are computed such that the mean of the major sample on its scale is equal to 50. In practice this means that most people will score lower than 50 on a given major scale.
7.1 Reliability
Test-retest reliability estimates, sample sizes, and descriptive statistics for each of the major similarity scales are presented in Table 7.1.
